Mat 5:17-18 KJV Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
‘Till heaven and earth pass’ Some scholars believe Jesus referred to physical heaven and earth, which has not passed away, therefore, the Old Covenant Law and Prophets must still be unfulfilled. Consequently, the New Covenant and our Salvation must still be on hold. Thankfully, when Jesus said ‘Till heaven and earth pass’, He was talking about covenant change. The Law and the Prophets were fulfilled at Christ’s return in AD 70. The Old Covenant (heaven and earth) and its temple ordinances passed away with the establishment of the New Covenant. Sadly, most scholars today continue to teach that our salvation is incomplete until a future return of Christ.
Don K Preston wrote ‘The World of Israel was the subject. We believe this is precisely what Jesus had in mind in Matthew 5:17-18 when he said “until heaven and earth pass, not one jot or one tittle shall pass from the law”. He was saying that until Israel’s “WORLD,” symbolized by the city and temple, was destroyed, the law would not pass away.’…Have Heaven and Earth Passed Away? (A must read.)
